1. Srila Prabhupada’s remedies
1.1. Common Cold
Add 1/2 tsp. crushed chilis and 1“ piece ginger root (cut up) to 1 1/2 cup water. Bring to a boil and then add 1 tsp. milk and 1 Tbs. honey. Allow chilis to settle to bottom before drinking. This clears the mucous by loosening it. The drink should be taken frequently during the day. Also–Make mixture of 1 cup water, 1 tsp. ground cloves and gargle. Repeat frequently during the day. Or–Peel 1” piece of ginger root and chew it. Repeat 4 to 5 times a day.
1.2. Sore Throat
Make a mixture of ground ginger powder and water (1 cup water to 1 Tbs. ginger) Gargle frequently. Or–Eat 1 tsp. ghee followed by 1 cup hot milk, and chew a few cardamon seeds. Repeat several times a day.
1.3. Colic (babies)
Soak 2 tsp. dried thyme in 1 cup of water until the water has a green-yellow color. Strain and add 1 tsp. baking soda to the water. Give by tsps. as needed. Also–Rub asafoetida on baby’s stomach.
1.4. Headache
For simple headache take a teaspoon and fill halfway with black pepper. Put a few drops of water on top and mix gently. Heat the spoon by holding it directly over a flame on the stove until mixture bubbles slightly and becomes a paste. If mixture is too thick add a little more water. Cool until black pepper can be touched and then apply it to the forehead.
1.5. Chest Cold
Fry 1/2 cup urad dahl in 2 Tbs. mustard seed oil. Apply warm mixture to chest, neck, hands and bottom of feet before going to bed. In the morning, heat 1/2 cup water, 1 Tbs. honey and 1/2 tsp. ground ginger and drink. Or–Apply mustard oil and camphor to back, neck, chest, hands and bottom of feet. Massage in well. Or–Mix 1 Tbs. honey with 1/4 tsp.(not 1/2) ground ginger. Eat frequently during the day. Especially good for young children and babies. Burn frankincense at frequent intervals throughout the day and use sufficient quantity to produce a nice cloud.
1.6. Constipation
Drink a cup or two of hot milk. Prepare milk with honey or malasses instead of sugar as an added laxative.
1.7. Tired Eyes
Apply a drop or two of honey in each eye. Bathe gently with cool water. Bathe eyes frequently with cool water.
1.8. Sore Muscles
Massage with mustard oil and camphor.
1.9. Hair Care
After washing hair when it is dry, rub coconut oil on your hands and then apply it to your hair, working in well. This makes hair completely managable and protects against dryness from the sun and split ends.
1.10. Swollen Glands
Mix calcium carbonate with honey to a smooth thick paste. Do not make watery. Apply to swollen glands at intervals during the day.
1.11. Toothpaste
This toothpaste is far superior to anything which is purchased in a store and is very inexpensive as well. To 1 cup calcium carbonate add 1 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. baking soda; add just enough mustard seed oil to make other ingredients crumbly. Mix very well.
1.12. Toothache
Add a few drops of oil of cloves to the toothpase and apply to tooth and gum. This will prevent further decay and might save the tooth.
1.13. Toothbrush
Take a fresh eucalyptus twig and break it into a 3“ long piece. Make thin long slices as if to peel the bark. The slices should be about 1/2” long and should spread out looking like a circle. Clean each tooth with this brush and massage gums well. It takes about 15 minutes to thoroughly clean the teeth. Throw the twig away after each use. Sassafras and cherry twigs may be used.
1.14. Stomachache or Indigestion
Chew a handful of anise seeds. Or–Roast a handful of cumin seeds and eat them cool. Or–For a bad upset stomach with vomiting, crush up tsp. camphor and mix with 1/4 tsp.(not 1/2) asafoetida. Place inside mouth to acquire juice.
1.15. Diarrhea
Drink 1/2 cup plain yogurt or lassi prepared with salt and roasted cumin seed.
1.16. Pimples
Mix olive oil with boric acid and apply.
1.17. Bruises, Scrapes, etc.
Heat tumeric and epsom salts to a paste and apply.
1.18. De’s Ointment
For external skin ailments, rashes, diaper rash, etc. Ingredients: Hard parafin (candle wax) – 1/2 oz. Soft parafin (vaseline) – 3 oz. Resin – 1 oz. Oil of Eucalyptus (joints, muscle pain) – 1/2 oz. Chlorophyll
1.18.1. Melt the two parafins and the crushed resin
In a small pot, stirring constantly. When all melted and mixed up, add the oil of eucalyptus and stir it in well. Let the mixture cool somewhat, but keep stirring or the resin will separate and harden on the bottom. Just before the mixture begins to solidify, add enough dry chlorophyll to make the ointment slightly dark green–not very much required. Stir the mixture thoroughly until it is completely cooled into an ointment–this keeps the ingredients together properly. The mixture should not be reheated after adding chlorophyll.
1.19. General cleansing
Frankincense and small pieces of camphor should be burned regularly since they purify and clear the air. Also they discourage insects like flies and mosquitos.
1.20. Clean the body
Two baths or showers should be taken each day. The genital of the women should be throughoutly washed with water each time the bathroom is used. After passing stool either a quick shower should be taken or the face hands anus and feet should be washed. Clothing should be taken off before passing stool And if not, they should be changed before entering the kitchen For cooking or cleaning. The bathroom is considered a contaminated place, So things that go into the bathroom should not be used in any other place, mops, broom and so on. When the bathroom is cleansed, eucalyptus should be put in the toilet bowl.
